Extensive website redesign

“The best thing about working with Hurja has been the smooth collaboration and solid results.”

Jasmin Välimäki, MAOL ry and MFKA-kustannus Oy

The Finnish Association for Teachers of Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Informatics, MAOL ry is an association that represents math and science teachers in Finland. It promotes their interests and advances math and science education nationwide.

Content scattered, users confused

Previously, MAOL ry’s content was split across two platforms: the association’s own website and the Peda.net portal. This fragmented structure made it difficult for users to find what they were looking for – and even to know where they were on the site.

The main goal of the redesign was to streamline the user experience by bringing all content onto a single platform. The new site needed a members-only section with login credentials linked to the association’s membership registry. Another key requirement was for local chapters to have their own editable pages – accessible only to chapter admins.

One platform, clear structure, and custom member access

The project started by mapping out the site’s information architecture together with MAOL. Based on the collaboration, we created a logical page structure and categorized the materials for the site’s resource library.

The platform of choice was WordPress – a familiar CMS for the client and our primary tool for web projects. We built a clear, user-friendly admin interface and completely rebuilt the materials archive. Each local chapter received its own dedicated page, editable only by its appointed administrators.

Member login was integrated with the Avoine membership registry. This eliminated the need for separate WordPress accounts: members can now log in using their existing credentials. Content on the members-only pages and in the materials archive becomes visible after login.

The site’s visual design was created by Grafiant.

A seamless experience for members and local chapters

Bringing two platforms together into one was a success. The new site is more structured and easier to expand. The resource archive now supports larger sets of learning materials.

Thanks to the integrated login, all member-exclusive content is now centralized and secure. The site’s scalability also allows MAOL to offer each local chapter a dedicated space for sharing updates and events.

MAOL ry is owned by MFKA-Kustannus Oy, which produces national exams and educational materials for schools and other educational institutions
