New legal requirement coming for online store in June – here’s what you need to know

In June 2026, a new requirement will take effect for all online stores selling to consumers: consumers must be provided with a clear cancellation option directly on the store’s website or app. The requirement will take effect on June 19, 2026.

What does the law mean in practice?

The cancellation function is a specific feature that allows consumers to exercise their statutory right to cancel directly where the contract was entered into. According to the Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority, the function must be available in the same place where the contract is entered into, for example on an online store website or in an app. A cancellation form or email instructions alone are no longer enough to meet the requirement. However, these remain acceptable ways to cancel alongside the new cancellation function.

In practice, the function must meet the following conditions: it must be easy to find; consumers must be able to enter the necessary information through it; and, after a cancellation, the seller must send confirmation in a durable format, such as by email. At the same time, it is also advisable to update the online store’s terms and conditions, return and cancellation policies, and other pre-contract information to ensure they comply with the new rules.

The Finnish Competition and Consumer Authority emphasizes that, before a contract is entered into, consumers must be informed about the terms, deadlines, and procedures related to exercising the right to cancel, and, going forward, also about the details of the cancellation function and where it can be found.

What needs to be done before June?

If your online store runs on WooCommerce or another platform, these changes may require technical updates to the checkout process, customer accounts, or a separate cancellation page. The implementation method will depend on your current setup, but it is advisable to start preparing well in advance.
