Service design in software projects and the benefits you cannot afford to ignore
The very idea of purchasing a software project makes many people break out in a cold sweat. Perhaps they are haunted by memories of a project into which a huge amount of money and time was poured, yet the end result was lackluster and failed to meet the set objectives. Often, the crux of the problem lies in the fact that, during the project, the end user of the service has been overlooked, and the focus has been on mere visual appeal or technical features rather than the user experience.
Through digital service design, we can ensure that we are building a digital service that not only meets your users’ needs, but also guides them toward purchasing decisions and keeps them engaged for longer.
When your customers feel that the service has been designed with them in mind, this leads to positive interactions and greater engagement. At the same time, service design can deliver significant savings and reduce unnecessary work in the later stages of software development. Service design helps ensure your project’s success and enables you to achieve your business objectives without unnecessary stress.
At Hurja, we also collaborate on our projects with other software companies. This text has been produced in collaboration with Sofokus. Our partnership brings together two strong players whose expertise seamlessly combines service design with technical implementation. Our shared goal is to create digital services that enhance the customer experience and support the business success of our clients.
Service design in a nutshell (and without all the dry jargon)
Service design is a user-centered design method that focuses on customers’ needs and expectations. Put simply, it means that a service is designed from the outset from the customer’s perspective. A development project initiated through service design facilitates UX/UI design, as the end result is clearly in mind right from the start of the design process.
Users don’t want to waste time looking for the ‘Buy’ button or learning how to use the features. It is therefore not enough for a digital service – be it a website or a mobile app – to be technically functional and visually appealing; it must also be easy and pleasant for the customer to use.
When your customers find the service’s user interface clear, they are more likely to continue further and proceed to a purchase or other desired conversion, such as adding an item to their cart, requesting further information or placing an order.
Customer focus at the heart of the project
By incorporating service design right from the very start of a software project, we can avoid many pitfalls that might later lead to unnecessary costs or delays. By taking users’ needs and wishes into account right from the start, we can be confident that the final outcome of the project will meet expectations.
Through service design, we can:
- Optimizing the customer journey: By designing a customer-centric journey, we help users move smoothly towards purchasing decisions and other goals.
- Increase conversions: Ease of use and a customer-centric approach improve the chances of turning users into customers or encouraging them to take other important actions.
- Reduces risks and costs: Through service design, we identify problem areas at an early stage, which helps to minimize unexpected costs during the project.
The tangible benefits of service design
Service design can be used to develop user-centered solutions that reduce unnecessary costs and risks.
A list of the tangible benefits of service design:
- The customer experience at the heart of everything
- Service design ensures that your customers are satisfied at every stage of your online service or other digital service. When the structure and user interface of a service are designed to meet customers’ needs, the user experience is seamless, which in turn increases engagement and reduces abandoned purchase processes.
- Conversion Optimization
- Every stage of the service – whether it’s finding a product, filling a shopping basket or requesting information – is an integral part of the customer’s journey.
- Service design helps ensure that your customers progress through these stages as smoothly as possible, which improves conversion rates and boosts revenue. See also: Google Analytics 4 (GA4) – a next-generation analytics tool.
- Long-term savings
- By focusing on customer-centered design, you can avoid costly redesigns at a later stage. A well-designed service requires fewer ongoing changes and less maintenance, which translates into long-term savings. A satisfied customer will use the service for longer, which increases customer value and reduces customer acquisition costs.
- Loyal customers
- When a customer perceives a service as personalized and tailored to their needs, they become more loyal. This fosters long-term customer relationships and reduces customer churn, which is valuable for the business. A loyal customer will keep coming back – and recommend your service to others.
As an example, we would like to highlight the reform of the A-Clinic Foundation carried out by Sofokus, which made effective use of service design. The design work involved mapping out the existing landscape by familiarizing ourselves with the target groups for the various services and gaining an understanding of the objectives of each service. The service design project culminated in a concept for a multisite platform comprising five websites, on which all of the A-Clinic Foundation’s digital services will be consolidated in the future.
Service design is an important part of a successful software project
Service design plays an important role in a software project. It not only makes the service a pleasure to use, but also supports an efficient customer journey and the optimization of conversions. User needs guide the development of the service, which translates into a better customer experience and cost savings in the long term.
When a service meets the user’s needs, the customer returns and recommends the service to others. This reduces customer churn and brings long-term benefits to the business. By focusing on your customers right from the start, you’ll end up with satisfied users and a productive digital service – and you’ll save yourself a lot of unnecessary headaches.
